Heavy rain can quickly turn roads, low-water crossings, driveways, and drainage areas into dangerous flood zones. Castlewood Fire & Rescue reminds everyone: never attempt to drive through flooded roadways.
Flood water is dangerous because you cannot see what is underneath it. The road may be washed out, damaged, or covered with debris. Water may also be deeper or moving faster than it appears, especially at night or during heavy rainfall. The National Weather Service warns that flooded roads can hide washed-out road surfaces, sharp debris, electrical hazards, and other dangers.
Turn Around, Don’t Drown
When you approach water covering the road, the safest decision is simple:
Turn around. Choose another route. Do not risk it.
It does not take much moving water to create a life-threatening situation. According to the National Weather Service, 6 inches of fast-moving water can knock an adult off their feet, 12 inches of rushing water can carry away most cars, and 2 feet of rushing water can carry away SUVs and trucks.
Why Flooded Roads Are So Dangerous
Driving into flood water can cause:
- Loss of vehicle control
- Engine stalling
- Vehicle flotation
- Being swept off the roadway
- Becoming trapped in rising water
- Delayed emergency response due to unsafe access
Even large vehicles are not immune. Pickups and SUVs can also be swept away by moving water.
What You Should Do
If you encounter a flooded roadway:
- Stop before reaching the water.
- Turn around and find another route.
- Never drive around barricades.
- Call 911 if someone is trapped or in immediate danger.
- Monitor local weather updates and emergency alerts.
Barricades are placed for a reason. Driving around them puts you, your passengers, and emergency responders at risk.
If Water Rises Around Your Vehicle
If flood water rises around your vehicle, stay calm and act quickly. If it is safe to do so, abandon the vehicle and move to higher ground. Call 911 as soon as possible. Do not enter moving water unless there is no other option.
